Islam is a doctrine that fundamentally emphasizes justice and moderation. Justice, in this context, means placing everything in its rightful place and executing every action with utmost integrity. Both the Qur'an and Hadith underscore the profound significance of justice and fairness. Prior to the advent of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), Arab society was devoid of justice and fairness; the poor and enslaved had no rights, while the affluent and powerful often treated them with cruelty. Interpersonal conflicts were widespread, frequently escalating into prolonged cycles of violence and bloodshed over minor disputes.
The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) revolutionized this society by uniting its fragmented tribes into a cohesive nation and establishing principles of equality. His commitment to justice was not limited to Muslims alone but extended to non-Muslims and disbelievers as well. The pursuit of justice was a key objective of the Prophets, and this is reflected in numerous Qur'anic verses that command fairness. In Islam, every individual is regarded as equal, and true justice is achieved through sincerity and piety.
This paper seeks to illuminate the concept of social justice and fairness in Islam as outlined in the Qur'an and exemplified by the life of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). In contemporary times, promoting and implementing these Islamic principles of social justice is more crucial than ever. To address the injustices and oppression prevalent in our societies, we can find the best guidance in the Qur'an and Sunnah.
