The holy Quran being the Divine revelation and that God revealed this doubtless book to the final Prophet Hazrat Muhammad (pbuh) is beyond doubt. However, the researchers of the Quranic sciences have been paying attention to the question where, when and how this holy book was revealed by God to the noble Prophet (pbuh). In this regard, the experts of the Quranic sciences have put forward different viewpoints. This research paper tries to find answers to the above like questions in light of the Quranic verses and prophetic traditions. The describing of this subject in detail by the experts, researchers and scholars of the Quranic sciences in unique ways and different ideological dimensions signify the importance of this debate.
The reality that has been highlighted in this short write up is that the glorious Quran was revealed by God the Exalted as the last book to the final Messenger (pbuh) in a very special night – the Night of Qadr (power) – of the blessed month of Ramazan, and many of the Quranic verses point to this fact. In some of these verses the term Inza’al has been used relating to the revelation of the Quran denoting that the Quran was revealed all at once, whereas the term Tanzil has been used in some of these verses indicating that the Prophet (pbuh) received the holy Quran gradually over a period of 23 years. It is only due to the use of these two terms that there are two opinions regarding the decent of the Quran (revealed all at once or sent down in piecemeal), otherwise, there is no contradiction in the verses concerning the Quranic revelation.
