The holy Quran uses words like plain exposition and other similar terms to describe itself. From the apparent meaning of these words it seems that everything in the holy book is clear and evident and nothing more is needed to understand its meanings. But at the same time such verses and meanings can be seen in the holy Quran that are not manifest themselves, but something else is required in order to get to the bottom of them and know their real meanings. This situation gives rise to the question can the holy Quran be understood only by the Quran itself or by Sunnah or by some other source. Different points of view come to the fore with respect to this question. Those who deemed the holy Quran sufficient for everything became known as Quranists. Those who were of the opinion that the exterior meaning of the holy Quran is insufficient and considered the traditions as clear and evident were called Akhbarion. Reviewing the roles of the holy Quran and the traditions while keeping in view the ways of Quranic expositions, I reached to the conclusion that although the holy Quran is clear and utterly manifest, but it does never mean that its details have been described and it is also not so that its ambiguities are unsolvable. So, the holy Quran, in order to make its addressees understand its meanings adopted different ways like knowing the background of the revelations, verses having clear meanings those having many meanings as well as understanding the rules and regulations and other tools of the Arabic language.
