The verse of Mawaddah or the verse of love is a famous verse in the holy Quran in which Muslims have been ordered by Allah to love the near relatives of the holy Prophet (pbuh). Though Shia and Sunni ulama are at variance about who are the masadiq (instances) of this verse, but they all agree that the love of Ahlul Bayt is a religious duty upon all Muslims. Even those, who deny that this verse spotlights the lofty position of the Ahlul Bayt, say that showing affection to the Ahlul Bayt is incumbent upon Muslims. Shia researchers and thinkers establish from this verse the evidence of the infallibility of the Ahlul Bayt, necessity of following their path and showing affection to them. Loving the Ahlul Bayt is a point of concord between Shias and Sunnis and this can help solving lot of jurisprudential and doctrinal matters. Keeping this objective in mind, an effort has been made in light of the verse of Mawaddah in this research paper to present an analytical study of the important issues relating to common beliefs of both the Shia and Sunni faiths. The paper consists of two parts. The first part deals with the beliefs of Shia muffasirin (exegetes) and scholars and the other part is based on the beliefs and arguments presented by Sunni mufassirin and scholars.
