Abstract

The Quran, as the final and eternal divine charter, was revealed for the guidance of humanity. However, the understanding, explanation, and interpretation of the Quran have remained essential from the Prophet’s era to the present day. During the time of the Infallibles, from the Holy Prophet (PBUH) to the beginning of the Major Occultation, the true exegete of the Quran was the infallible tongue. However, especially after the Major Occultation, religious scholars and eminent figures have employed various interpretative approaches to uncover the divine message and convey it to humanity. Over the past 1400 years, different exegetical methodologies have emerged.

This paper analytically examines the interpretative methodology of Ayatollah Khamenei, the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution, who considers the comprehensiveness of religion and the Quran as his practical and intellectual axis. By analyzing his statements and teachings, the study explores which classical or contemporary exegetical approach he follows in interpreting Quranic verses. As a jurist and Quranic exegete, Ayatollah Khamenei extracts guidance from the Quran through a methodology that blends traditional and modern exegetical approaches. His interpretation is not limited to linguistic or literary analysis but serves as a practical guide for the Muslim Ummah, addressing contemporary challenges.

This social exegetical approach (Tafsir Ijtima’i) interprets Quranic verses based on divine social laws, providing solutions to individual and societal issues of the modern era. Thus, his method ensures that the Quran remains a source of practical guidance in contemporary times.
