This research paper presents an analytical study of the Qur’anic biography and personality of Imam Ali (A.S.) in the light of the opinions of Orientalists. After explaining the conceptual meanings of Orientalism and “Seerah” in both linguistic and technical terms, the study briefly highlights Imam Ali’s (A.S.) birth, upbringing, and his scholarly, religious, moral, and social contributions. The research emphasizes that Imam Ali (A.S.) is a perfect model in knowledge, justice, piety, bravery, asceticism, eloquence, and rhetoric, and that he was the closest companion and a leading intellectual and spiritual authority after the Holy Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). His personality is presented not only through Islamic sources but also through the views of non-Muslim Orientalists and Western thinkers.
The paper analyzes the statements of various Orientalists and non-Muslim scholars who described Imam Ali (A.S.) as an unparalleled leader, just ruler, gateway to knowledge and wisdom, perfect embodiment of piety, and a unique figure in human history. These views demonstrate that although the primary aim of Orientalist studies was critical inquiry, they were still compelled to acknowledge the greatness, intellectual superiority, and moral excellence of Imam Ali (A.S.). The research concludes that Imam Ali’s (A.S.) personality holds an exemplary position not only in Islamic history but also in global intellectual and cultural heritage.
