The present article analytically examines the status and significance of the Holy Qur’an from the perspective of Imam Ali (a.s). Imam Ali, being one of the foremost preservers, interpreters, and practitioners of the Qur’an, was deeply acquainted with the contexts, circumstances, and timings of its revelation. The Holy Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) had specially imparted to him the knowledge of Qur’anic interpretation and exegesis. In Nahj al-Balagha, Imam Ali describes the Qur’an as a source of peace for the hearts, healing for the soul, a beacon of guidance, and an endless ocean of knowledge. According to him, the Qur’an is a silent proof that requires a speaking authority (nāṭiq) for its true explanation, and he considered himself to be the rightful bearer of that responsibility.Imam Ali emphasized that the Qur’an is the true foundation for understanding religion, establishing justice and virtue, and reforming the self. He likened the Qur’an to a lamp that never extinguishes and a sea whose depths are immeasurable. He stressed that judgments should be based on the Qur’an rather than on individuals.According to Imam Ali, neglecting the Qur’an leads individuals and societies toward moral decay, divine punishment, and spiritual decline. He regarded turning to the Qur’an, reflecting upon its meanings, and acting upon its teachings as the path to salvation. The article concludes that the true understanding of the Qur’an is best achieved through interpreters like Imam Ali, and that works such as Nahj al-Balagha continue to connect us with the Qur’an’s authentic message even today.
