Abstract
In the twentieth century, a revolution emerged whose foundations were laid upon Islamic principles. Although this revolution occurred only in Iran, it breathed new life into the Islamic nation (Ummah), which had long been afflicted with division and disunity. The leader of the revolution, Ayatollah Khomeini (may Allah have mercy on him), gave the Muslim Ummah a message of unity. A nation that had been entangled in discord for centuries was steered toward unity, and as a result, the "Week of Unity" was initiated, the effects of which are still evident in the Islamic world today.
This paper briefly discusses the need and importance of Islamic unity in light of the statements of Ayatollah Khamenei. He has emphasized that Shi'a and Sunni should not create discord among themselves, lest the enemy exploit it. In another place, he stated:
The Islamic Ummah today is more in need of unity and mutual closeness than ever before.
That is, the colonial and foreign forces that are conspiring to divide the Ummah can only be countered through unity. It is now more essential than ever that Muslims create intellectual and cultural harmony so that the enemy may be defeated. In another statement, he declared:
